Secondary School Admission Process

Country School's Secondary School Counseling program guides every 8th Grade family through the search for the right next school. Our counselors know the schools, prepare your child for interviews, and manage every recommendation and application detail along the way.

  • Throughout the Fall

Schools host open houses and send representatives to campus. Check the Secondary School Office calendar for visit dates, and complete interest forms on school websites for updates.
  • September

  • October

Narrow your list. Attend tours and interviews at the schools that made the cut.
  • November

Take the SSAT if your schools require it, and register early. Parochial school applications are due this month. Finish remaining tours and interviews.

Student Checklist

List of 3 items.

  • Graded Essay

Some schools require a graded writing sample. Eighth Grade English and history build it into coursework: one analytical essay, one creative piece, with teacher feedback. Essays go out in early November for families to upload. Kristin Liu and Peter Burdge are available to answer English and history questions and provide assistance.
  • Mock Interview

Every student practices with Ms. Sun, our Associate Director of Admission and a former admissions officer at Choate and Miss Porter's. Email her your open times and she'll set a 30-minute slot.

    Send a thank-you note after.
  • Recommendation Letters

Your child's counselor, math teacher, and English teacher write recommendations automatically. A third letter is optional. We submit everything: directly to parochial schools, and through Gateway and SAO for everyone else.

Applying parochial? Tell us right away. Their deadlines come early.
